Index Token
A single ERC-20 token that represents a whole basket of crypto assets, giving diversified exposure in one tradable, transferable unit.
An index token is a single ERC-20 token that represents ownership of an entire basket of crypto assets, letting holders gain diversified exposure through one tradable unit. Instead of buying ten tokens in ten transactions, you buy one token whose value tracks the combined value of everything in the basket.
Mechanically, most index tokens are minted when someone deposits the underlying assets, or the funds used to buy them, into a smart contract, and they are redeemed when the token is exchanged back for its proportional share of the basket. The composition is defined by target weights, and the token's fair value at any moment is the sum of its per-token claims on each underlying asset, often called its net asset value.
The appeal is convenience and diversification: one purchase, one token to hold, exposure to a theme or sector without managing individual positions. Designs vary widely, though. Some index tokens are backed in-kind and redeemable, others are synthetic, and some are actively rebalanced by governance while others are fixed at creation. Those differences matter far more than the label.
On permissionless platforms, anyone can create an index token and lock its basket into an immutable vault at launch. As with any DeFi asset, an index token diversifies within crypto, not away from it: if the whole market falls, the basket falls with it, and nothing here is financial advice.
